Christmas
as we know it today is a Victorian invention of the 1860s but our Christmas
is a product of hundreds of years of both secular and religious traditions
from around the globe.
Good
old Santa Claus is mix of many old traditions and customs: St. Nicholas,
Christkind, Pere Noel, Babouschka, even a kindly witch who rides a
broomstick down the chimneys of Italian homes to deliver toys into
the stockings. All of them were gift-givers.
Christmas tree has traditions
in believing that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits,
and illness. In some traditions it symbolized the triumph of life over
death. Green branches in the house symbolized that soon farms and orchards
would be green and fruitful. The Christmas tree arrived in America soon
after 1846, after American saw Queen Victoria and Prince Albert sketched
in the Illustrated London News standing with their children around a Christmas
tree.
The
plant from Mexico called poinsettias gave its colours to Christmas.
Light is also very important part of Christmas celebration. It symbolized
Sun's victory over darkness of winter.
