The
Symbols of Canada: The beaver
attained official status as an emblem of Canada on March 24,
1975. The early Europeans explorers saw the fur trade as an
opportunity to acquire revenue to establish a North American
empire. There were an estimated six million beavers in Canada
before the start of the fur trade. In the mid-19th century the
beaver was close to extinction. The maple leaf
the maple leaf began to serve as a Canadian symbol
as early as 1700 and on February 15, 1965, the red maple leaf
flag was inaugurated as the National Flag of Canada. |
