Easter
was originally a pagan festival. It was ancient Saxons that celebrated
the return of spring with a festival commemorating their goddess
of offspring and of springtime, the Norse Ostara or Eostre, Eastre.
Her earthly symbol was a rabbit. The rabbit has been a symbol
of the spring season, fertility and new life.
The
pagan festival of Eastre occurred at the same time of year as
the Christian observance of the Resurrection of Christ. With time,
the early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling,
Easter.
The egg was a symbol of rebirth. Eggs were given as springtime
gifts in ancient China, Greece, and Rome. They were coloured by
boiling together with the leaves or flowers.
Early Christians saw the lamb as a symbol of Jesus.
The other Easter symbols are: The Cross, Chicks and Ducks, The
Easter Lily, Pussy Willows, Palm Branches, Spring flowers, Bread
and Wine.
