The
Valentine Day has its roots in ancient pagans
rituals. They were celebrate fertility and purification.
The Romans too were celebrate beginning of spring
after a long winter. February 15 was a fertility
festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god
of agriculture. Probably this was time to choose
bride and start a new life.
So,
Valentine Day, as all others modern holidays has
its roots in circle of nature. But we need a story
and Catholic Church gave us one about St. Valentine.
One
legend contends that Valentine was
a priest who served during the third century in
Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single
men made better soldiers than those with wives and
families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine
continued to perform marriages for young lovers
in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered,
Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
During
the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in
France and England that February 14 was the
beginning of birds' mating season, which added
to the idea that the middle of February should
be a day for romance.
