The
question is - why would someone even consider to make a stained
glass project? Answer to the question - why buy a stained glass
product? - its simple, you want a drastic change in your surroundings,
or you need to give a respectable present to someone special
that is more meaningful than a pair of socks -do it yourself.
But why do a stained glass project by yourself?
First of all it is more affordable than buying someone else's
work (even if you order from us).
It will be more meaningful for you if you use your own time
and skills to make something nice for yourself or your friends,
something everybody can enjoy for many years to come.
Second important question is - why is the first stained glass
project usually also the last for the majority of stained glass
hobbyists?
That is usually because people go to these stained glass "how
to do" classes where you find people whose job is to sell
you as much glass and equipment as they can instead of educate
you how to make your own project in the simplest and most affordable
way.
TOOLS
Never buy tools made just for a "hobbyist". Those
tools are usually less expensive but not nearly as durable as
tools for professionals and the savings in price is just not
worth it. Stained glass is very addictive and you will probably
have to get the good tools really soon.
Always do your research, do not leave it up to the store to
"fill up" your shopping list.
GLASS
Before buying glass for your project make sure that you know
just how much of the glass you need and what are colors you
need. If it is a project requiring only a few colors in opal
glass than instead of buying a different sheet for each color
you can consider getting only one sheet of opal glass. You can
find very nice mixes of colors on these sheets which not only
gives you two or more different colors but also beautiful mixes
where the colors overlap each other.
Make sure to check the color of the glass sheet by putting it
against a light source because stained glass usually has one
shade on the table top and another against the light. ...Just
make sure you check.
Patterns
It is a lot easier to make your stained glass project if you
have a pattern. Even though it sounds hard, making your own
pattern is really easy. For example: You just bought a brand
new car and want to make a car glass panel to hang in your office.
Step one: take a picture of it, with a regular camera or print
out one of the photos you can surely find on the internet. Step
two: use tracing paper to outline the major lines and significant
details. Step three: look at what you ended up with, if it looks
like your car you are finished and if you missed a few lines
fix it and you are done!
